Exhibition « Gurs 1940, expulsion and murder of the Jewish population of south-west Germany »

La Maison de la Conférence de Wannsee à Berlin, la Maison d’Izieu et la région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes se sont associées à l’occasion des 80 ans de “l’opération Bürckel” en 2020. Le 7 octobre 2021, la Maison d’Izieu inaugurait – pour la première fois en France – l’exposition franco-allemande « Gurs 1940, expulsion et assassinat de la population juive d’Allemagne du sud-ouest », en présence de nombreux partenaires et invités.

L’exposition, conçue par la Maison de la Conférence de Wannsee, présente comment plus de 6 500 hommes, femmes et enfants juifs du pays de Bade, du Palatinat et de Sarre en Allemagne sont expulsés vers le camp de Gurs, dans le sud de la France – au cours de l’une des premières déportations systématiques organisées par les nazis les 22 et 23 octobre 1940. Un panneau complémentaire est dédié aux familles d’enfants accueillis à la Colonie d’Izieu, qui ont vécu cette déportation.

La cérémonie a été présidée par Sophie Rotkopf, Vice-présidente en charge de la Culture à la région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes et par Michael Blume, commissaire à la lutte contre l’antisémitisme du Land Bade-Wurtemberg en Allemagne.

Jennifer Heidtke, commissaire de l’exposition et Christoph Kreutzmueller, chef des expositions à la Maison de la Conférence de Wannsee ont présenté l’exposition avant qu’un hommage aux enfants et adultes déportés de la Colonie d’Izieu soit rendu devant la maison.

L’après-midi, une table ronde à laquelle participaient Michael Blume, Géraldine Schwartz, Mathias Dreyfuss et Dominique Vidaud intitulée « Mémoire de la Shoah et défense de la démocratie » a permis un état des lieux de l’antisémitisme et du racisme aujourd’hui, en Allemagne et en France et de questionner le rôle de la mémoire dans le combat perpétuel contre la haine.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Nuremberg Trials, an event was organized on October 15, 2021 at the Maison d’Izieu. The photo album of Judge Henri Donnedieu de Vabres, restored thanks to the U.S. Consulate in Lyon, was unveiled for the first time and 8 conferences with historians and specialists in international penal law were broadcast live with simultaneous translation into English to the general public. All of the talks in French and English are available on the Maison d’Izieu’s Youtube channel.

The photo album of the Nuremberg

The photo album of the Nuremberg trial of judge Henri Donnedieu de Vabres, signed by all the judges and deputy judges at Nuremberg, presents 116 pictures. Some of the photos are very well known, but others are still unpublished. This treasure, which documents and illustrates an important part of history, was entrusted in 2019 to the Documentation and Research Center of the Maison d’Izieu by the family of Judge Henri Donnedieu de Vabres.

The work, which was in a deteriorated and fragile state, underwent extensive restoration thanks to a federal grant from the United States, obtained with help of the U.S. Consulate in Lyon. This support also allowed the digitization of the pages and the creation of facsimiles.

The restored photo album was unveiled during this day in the presence of the families of the French magistrates at the International Military Tribunal: Donnedieu de Vabres, Falco, Debenest. Also present were a delegation from the diplomatic representatives of the UN in Geneva and numerous guests.

All of the presentations were filmed and translated into English. The replays are now available on the Youtube channel of the Maison d’Izieu.

Last July, Maison d’Izieu has also been given the documents of the General Counsel in the French delegation to the IMT, Delphin Debenest. These new archives further enrich the research.
