Educational services Schools Nearly 15,000 schoolchildren are welcomed at the Maison d’Izieu every year. All the activities offered are led by a guide or an activity leader for groups of 30 students maximum (beyond that you will need two activities to get the most out of the trip). Discovering the Maison d’Izieu is well suited to pupils studying the History-Geography-EMC programmes and it is also relevant to pupils studying French, modern languages, arts and philosophy. Pupils from primary schools, secondary schools and apprentice or vocational training centres are welcome at the Maison d’Izieu. Given the topics discussed, it is recommended to bring pupils from age 9 and up. Tours and activities are always adapted to the level of the classes. Educational booklet Download the PDF Tour + The Maison d’Izieu organises a two-hour guided tour of the site for all school groups (house and permanent exhibition). Self-guided tours are not permitted. Guided tours are available in English, Italian, Spanish, German and Hebrew, on request. A tour guide goes around with the pupils and helps them discover the history and remembrance of the place while trying to involve them in the tour. They are constantly invited to read, reflect, ask questions), discuss and therefore actively participate in the remembrance work carried out by the remembrance team. In addition to the history of the “Hérault Refugee Children’s home” and its context (Vichy France, anti-Semitic policy and their collaboration in the “final solution” and their impacts on the families of the children of Izieu), the tour also focuses on questions of justice (relating to the Nuremberg and Klaus Barbie trials) and remembrance (particularly the memorial plaques and headstones on the site). Duration: 2 hours In order to make your visit even better and to learn more about certain themes, it is recommended to spend a full day at the site by participating in another activity. VISIT US Interactive tour + Pupils visit the house and learn all about its history with a tour guide for one hour and then discover, in groups of two or three, part of the exhibition through booklets (also for one hour). After a break for lunch, pupils are given a writing activity and then everyone comes back together and shares their work (two hours). Duration: 4 hours Workshops + In the workshop, pupils are divided into small groups and shown archives, video clips (fictional films, testimonies) and artistic support materials (music, poetry, paintings, etc.) so they can learn more about the history and they then discuss it both between themselves and with the guide. At the end of the workshop, time is normally set aside for feedback and discussion. Depending on the chosen theme, pupils can take what they have made home (maps with the routes, posters, digital exhibition, etc.). Each workshop lasts two hours. The three workshop rooms are all equipped with a large digital touch screen. The themes discussed and the preferred approaches offered in the workshop: The history of the Colonie des enfants réfugiés de l’Hérault [Hérault Refugee Children’s Home] and the Jewish children who were welcomed there; Vichy France; the Nazi regime; mass crimes. The creation of international justice (from Nuremberg to The Hague) and the concept of crime against humanity. Creating remembrance (individual, collective, institutional, etc.). An artistic approach to learning how the arts have seen the annihilation of the Jews in Europe, through works created during and after the war. A citizen-centred approach that allows us to use history to question the world today based on the themes of commitment, stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination, anti-Semitism, negationism, etc. Every year, the Maison d’Izieu creates a workshop dedicated to the preparation of the Concours national de la résistance et de la déportation [National Competition about Resistance and Deportation]. Duration: 2 hours Meet a witness + The Maison d’Izieu organises meet and greets with the former children of the Izieu home, the hidden children as well as with Mr Jacques Vedrine, the expert psychiatrist at the K Barbie trial. As the number of potential meet and greet sessions is limited, the testimonies are reserved for groups that have a relevant project throughout the school year. Duration: Around 2 hours Meeting with an artist + The Maison d’Izieu organises meetings with artists who have worked on pieces relating to the history and remembrance of the Shoah in an original way, either through video, music or the visual arts. The visual artist Olivier Camen proposed, through a collaborative work, a reading of the destinies of the children of Izieu between the issues of remembrance and how that resonates with us now. Refugee children, then and now In 2016, a regional partnership bringing together schools, associations and places of remembrance dedicated to refugee children in the past was set up. This project aims to make pupils think about migration today, in the light of what happened in the past. They created audio clips and went on a web-radio show. Entirely designed and hosted by around 15 year old pupils attending Lycée Hector Berlioz secondary school in Côte-Saint-André, the show was recorded on 21 May 2019 at the Maison d’Izieu. It was broadcast by the radio station Couleurs FM. With support from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and the Rectorate of the Académie de Grenoble and led in partnership with Couleur FM and the Maison d’Izieu.
